Zip lines may help parks cover maintenance costs

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Zip lines might be a new way for Metro Vancouver’s parks to rake in some additional revenue.

There are 22 regional parks in Metro Vancouver and they get by on a budget of about 30 million dollars. When you factor in maintenance, that’s not a lot of money and Parks Committee Chair Gayle Martin says they need to start looking at other revenue sources. “You can’t keep going to the taxpayer year after year, and if we can find other streams of revenue to offset maintenance or even capital projects, then I think it’s a good thing.”

She says one possibility might be zip lines, like they have done up on Grouse Mountain. She says Tynehead Park in Surrey might be a good fit.

Martin says a good example of a park that makes money through enhanced services is Stanley Park with the Aquarium, the train and pitch & putt.
