Police crack down on strict impaired driving laws

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It’s the first weekend B.C.’s tough new drinking and driving laws are in effect and News1130’s Sheila Scott joined officers during the early morning hours at a roadblock in Surrey.

During the first hour and a half, 10 people were ticketed for a number of different violations, including blowing 0.05.  That’s when they were informed they’d have their driver’s license suspended for three days and would have their car impounded for three days.

Corporal Lorne Lecker with the Surrey RCMP Traffic Section says it’s too early to know if it’s stopping people from drinking and driving but people are visibly scared.  “People are coming up to me questioning it and noticeably concerned about the penalties and they should be they are quite severe.”

Lecker adds the legislation will be a success when he’s pulling over the same amount of cars but giving fewer tickets.
