Some say approach to closing puppy mills is wrong

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Animal rescue groups are celebrating Richmond City Hall’s vote to ban the sale of puppies and dogs in pet stores.  However, not everyone is happy about the decision.

Stacey Halliday with PJ Pets says it’s not the right approach and city hall is putting legitimate businesses out of business.

She adds that while her store is against the sale of puppy-mill dogs, pet stores are being targeted.  “And simply from an association with puppy-mills is very unfair when we have clearly shown over and over again that our breeders don’t belong to that group.  Even though it’s a very small portion of our business, on principal alone, the intent is correct.”

Halliday explains the way they are going about it is wrong.  “What we should be doing is finding puppy-mills and shutting them down, to ensure they don’t get anywhere including Craigslist, Kijiji and in newspaper ads.”
