Canucks leave Sami Salo on initial roster

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canucks have until noon today to submit their 23-man roster to the NHL and get under the salary cap.

The roster, put together by GM Mike Gillis and cap guru Lawrence Gilman, will look very different from the team taking the ice Saturday night against the L.A. Kings. Sami Salo will be on today’s roster. So will goalie Eddie Lack and Cody Hodgson. Meanwhile, Cory Schneider, Alex Bolduc and Guillaume Desbiens will spend the day in Manitoba.

This is all strategy, as that trio will be called up in time for Saturday’s game – Lack and Hodgson will be sent down, and Salo will be put on the long-term injured reserve.

The Canucks are trying to get as close to the $59.4 million salary cap, so they get the most return when they put Salo on the LTI, giving them enough options to re-call players from the Moose throughout the season.
