BCAA warns young drivers about dangers of speed

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In the wake of a crash suspected to have involved street racing, BCAA is reminding young drivers about the dangers of speed.

Street racing hasn’t been reported much recently. But last night’s crash in Langley involving a suspected teenage street racer is raising some concern. An 18-year-old man is in hospital with serious internal injuries.

Allan Lamb is the head of BCAA‘s Traffic Safety Foundation. He says street racing laws enacted in 2002 that impound cars and hand out license suspensions have helped, but the problem hasn’t been wiped out. “Sadly, these are incidents involving young drivers and there is nothing that kills our young drivers more than traffic crashes.”

Lamb says the onus is on parents to teach their kids responsible habits behind the wheel. He points out seven people die in crashes each week in BC.
