Whitecaps gear up for MLS draft Wednesday

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers start building their rosters on Wednesday, as the MLS expansion draft is set to take place.

The Timbers, who have the first pick and Whitecaps, will each select 10 players during the 10-round draft.

Chicago’s Freddie Ljungberg, New York’s Juan Pablo Angel and Toronto’s Julian de Guzman were among the players made available by the 16 existing teams.

Each existing team was allowed to protect 11 players from their 2010 roster.  Certain youth players and so-called designated players with a no-trade clause in their contract had to be protected.

Next season is when the Whitecaps and Timbers kick-off their first MLS campaign.
