Man spends a week living in the Downtown Eastside

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – He wanted to know what it was like to be on the streets, all alone on Christmas. A man took to the Downtown Eastside for seven nights to experience what it was like to be “Homeless for the Holidays.”

Nima Farzaneh was armed with a just sleeping bag and a few layers of clothing, and even panhandled to get by. He says he noticed some people treated him differently, and most avoided eye contact.

He tells us, “Sometimes I think it would have been nice for me to have someone to sit next to me and start talking to me. I slept on the street every night except for the last one when I stayed in a shelter.”

Farzaneh says he did notice a sense of community, and his view on homelessness has totally changed. “Certainly not everyone is addicted to drugs. They are not all thieves or bad people.”
