Whitecaps introduce newest defender

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps have announced the signing of 27-year-old defender Alain Rochat.

Rochat was born in Quebec and comes over to the team from FC Zurich of the Swiss Super League. He spent some time with the Caps in August but returned to Switzerland after the season.

Rochat says he’s not expecting to be a leader right away. “Leadership, for me, is for the older players…” He says that doesn’t mean that he can’t fill the role, it’s just not expected right off the bat.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Teitur Thordarson says Rochat fits in perfectly. He’s stressing that toughness will be a major asset in Major League Soccer and Alain possesses that quality. Thordarson referred to him as a big strong lad who is very versatile in the backfield and can fill many roles.

The Whitecaps now get their pre-season plans in order before beginning their inagural season on March 19th against Toronto FC.
