Layton makes campaign pit stop in Surrey

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Stephen Harper broke his promise to British Columbians.  That’s what Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton told voters at a rally in Surrey on Day 2 of the election campaign.

That broken promise was over the Harmonized Sales Tax.

Layton says people, for the most part, blame former Premier Gordon Campbell for the controversial 12 per cent tax, when really the push for it was made by Harper.  “I do not believe you can trust Mr. Harper.  I said this before when he broke his own fixed date elections law, jumped ahead of himself and called an election a year ahead of time.”

Layton also outlined a plan to improve BC’s healthcare.  He cited a story News1130 brought you first, about overcrowding at a local ER.  “Hospital-hallway medicine has shamefully graduated to Tim Horton’s healthcare at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.”

If he’s elected, Layton says he would cut the cost of prescription drugs, hire more doctors and nurses, and give families the flexibility to take care of an aging or sick relative.
