More email spam coming our way thanks to security breach

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many Canadians can expect to see an increase in email spam after a security breach at Epsilon, a Texas company that manages corporate email systems. An unknown number of Best Buy customers are affected.

The US company says hackers accessed names and email addresses, but no other personal information. Victims of the breach are being warned to expect an increase in spam email.

“Phishing, or a brand-spoofing scam, would be an email that actually appears to be from a legitimate company. So it leads someone to believe that they are actually being contacted by a company that they have already done business with,” says Kevin Hollett with the Lower Mainland Better Business Bureau. He notes any unsolicited request for information should be treated suspiciously.

“The recommendation is if it’s an unsolicited email request for information, be cautious. Contact the business directly and verify that they have sent the email,” he warns.

Epsilon handles the email system for Best Buy’s RewardZone members. An unknown number of companies in Canada and the US are affected.
