VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of local sports happening this weekend.

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks held their first practice ahead of the start of the Stanley Cup Final today at Rogers Arena where the status of injured forward Manny Malhotra was the headline.

Malhotra, who hasn’t played since mid March and had two eye procedures, was out in full pads and was cleared for practice with light contact for the first time since being hit in the eye by a puck in a game against Colorado. Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis can’t say if Malhotra will play in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Canucks are awaiting the winner of tonight’s Boston/Tampa Bay NHL Eastern Conference Final. The winner of tonight’s Game 7 will be flying to Vancouver to open up the Stanley Cup Final Wednesday night (5 p.m.) at Rogers Arena.

MLS

The Vancouver Whitecaps (1-5-5) return to Major League Soccer league play when they host the New York Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon.

The Eastern Conference Red Bulls (4-2-5) are making their first trip to Vancouver. New York extended its winless run to four games with a midweek home draw against the Colorado Rapids and will not have French star Thierry Henry, who didn’t make the trip due to a knee injury.

Game time tomorrow is 2:30 p.m.

W League

Vancouver Women’s Whitecaps put their undefeated W League record on the line tonight when they host the unbeaten Colorado Rush in the second match of the 2011 Whitecaps Women’s Soccer Series.  The match kicks off at 7:00pm at Chilliwack’s Exhibition Stadium.

Memorial Cup

It’s a do-or-die semifinal game for the Kootenay Ice today at the Memorial Cup in Mississauga, Ontario. The Ice face the host Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors to determine which team moves on to play the Saint John Sea Dogs in Sunday’s final.

Faceoff is 4 p.m. and the game can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific.
