Torres torches Thomas in Game 1 win for the Canucks

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Raffi Torres scored with 19 seconds left in the third period to give Vancouver a 1-0 win in Game One of the Stanley Cup Final series. Ryan Kesler and Jannik Hansen assisted on the lone goal.

Vancouver’s best chance came a few minutes earlier when Alex Edler hit the iron.

Both Vezina Trophy nominees between the pipes were excellent. Roberto Luongo blocked 36 pucks, while Tim Thomas turned aside 33 of 34 shots.

Referees Stephen Walkom and Dan O’Rourke were busy, calling a dozen penalties in the first 40 minutes. No infractions were called in the third period.

Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis hurt himself in the second period after he took out the Bruin’s Milan Lucic with a hip check. The native of Smithers did not return to the contest. He is listed as day-to-day.

Vancouver winger Alex Burrows could face some discipline from the NHL. Boston forward Patrice Bergeron claims Burrows bit his finger at the end of the first period, when both players were mixing it up.

The Canucks take a 1-0 lead in the series. Game Two is on Saturday at Rogers Arena.
