Greenest City Action Plan: Vancouver rolls out more details

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you thought the bike lanes were bold, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

The City of Vancouver is rolling out even more ambitious plans in its bid to become the world’s greenest city by 2020. Ten key areas have been identified in the Greenest City Action Plan: economy, climate, buildings, transportation, waste, outdoors, eco-footprint, clean water, clean air, and local food.

The most ambitious plans include doubling the number of green jobs. That includes everything from electric vehicle techs to urban farmers. The plan also calls for all buildings put up after 2020 to be carbon neutral and reducing average car trip distance by 20 per cent.

The City also wants to double the number of green jobs in the city, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and per capita water consumption by one-third, and increase the number of local food sources by half.

One thing is missing though: the cost. Councillors are set to vote on the plan on Thursday.
