Prince George murder suspect raises security fears

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The details of the case of an accused serial killer in Prince George should be a warning for anyone who hooks up online and then meets a person face-to-face.

Cody Legebokoff was known for using the online nickname “1CountryBoy.”  The 21-year-old is accused of killing three women and a 15-year-old girl.

UBC Computer Science Professor Richard Rosenberg says it highlights the need for everyone, particularly young people, to be careful who they associate with in an online forum.

“They will meet them in places and sometimes public places and sometimes not so public and the danger of course are as we’ve seen there’s lots of an instance, cases around the world, where people have been contacted and bad things have followed.”

He also worries that many people unknowingly leave themselves exposed to predators.

“Especially young people, young people who are flattered by the interest taken in them by people online, connect with their friends, see what they’re doing, where they’re going, all these things create environments of people are more trusting than they should be.”

Rosenberg advises parents to keep the home computer in a central location and never in a child’s bedroom.  As for everyone else, he recommends you only share your private details with people you knew in real life first.
