News1130’s weekend sports round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks continue their homestand tomorrow night when Cody Hodgson and the Buffalo Sabres visit Rogers Arena.

Hodgson returns with his new team just five days after he was sent to Buffalo in a trade that brought forward Zack Kassian and defenceman Marc-Andre Gragnani to Vancouver.

This is a rare visit by Buffalo; the last meeting between the two clubs was a Sabres 4-3 overtime victory back in November of 2010. The Sabres come to town off of back-to-back shutout victories in California, 1-0 over San Jose yesterday and a 2-0 win in Anaheim on Wednesday night.

The Canucks are at home for a seven-game stretch and will now play 12 of their remaining 17 regular season games at Rogers Arena. Faceoff tomorrow is 7 p.m.

AHL

The Abbotsford Heat open a six-game homestand tonight with the first of two games against the Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars’ top affiliate. The Heat are battling for playoff position while the Stars sit in last place in the Western Conference

The Heat are coming off  a 3-2 shootout win in Rockford, Illinois which completed a five-game Midwest road trip and has earned points in six of their last seven games. Faceoff  tonight and tomorrow is 7 p.m.

WHL

A home game with Medicine Hat (7:30 p.m.) begins a busy final month of the Western Hockey League regular season for the Vancouver Giants.  The weekend will finish with a two-game series on Vancouver Island with the Victoria Royals.

With nine games remaining in their regular season schedule the Giants currently sit in fourth place in the Western Conference with 76 points, one up on the Spokane Chiefs for the battle for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Tonight’s game marks the second and final meeting of the season between the Giants and the Tigers.  Medicine Hat defeated Vancouver 5-4 in a shootout back on October 8th at the Coliseum.

Game time is 7:30pm.

BCHL

The six-game Friday night in the BC Hockey includes one game on the Lower Mainland. Langley visits Coquitlam at 7 p.m.

CURLING

The Tim Hortons Brier opens tomorrow at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon. BC is represented by the Jim Cotter rink out of Vernon and Kelowna Curling Clubs. Cotter’s foursome is coached by four-time Brier champ Rick Folk. The Okanagan rink opens up against Alberta’s Kevin Koe foursome of Calgary tomorrow night.
