Local filmmakers turn to Internet for financing

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Not every movie made in BC has the budget of a Mission Impossible or X-Men.

One tiny, local production company is using the power of the internet to help fund its first full-length feature film. The team behind the comedy ‘The Cover-Up‘ is going the grassroots way by raising $25,000 through crowdfunding — a perk-based form of microfinancing.

Producer Javier Badillo says after only two days, they’ve already raised $1,000 on Indiegogo.

“It’s a marathon when you do crowdfunding. You’re not expecting all the money to come in at the very beginning, you have to keep pushing, it’s a lot of work on Facebook, Twitter and all your friends and family,” he explains.

Badillo tells us if you pledge money, you get specific perks, like a credit in the movie or a poster signed by the cast and director. He notes it’s a cheap movie to make because all the actors are local and only two locations are needed.

The Cover-Up is about a love-lost young man named Matt who wants to win back the affections of his high school sweetheart; the one that got away.

Director Erick Boychuk’s short films have won several awards and were hits at the Calgary International Film Festival, NSI Film Festival, and CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto.

Shooting for The Cover-Up starts on April 15th.
