RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Many of the people who jumped into action to help passengers get out of a burning plane at YVR last fall were recognized for their efforts Thursday night.
They were given what are called 911 Awards, at a ceremony held annually for first responders in Richmond.
Mayor Malcolm Brodie says he was struck by how many people stopped to lend a hand at the accident site.
“The first people to arrive were the people simply on the scene, walking or in their cars. Some of them even went into the aircraft which was on fire, assisting passengers to get out. It’s quite a story of citizenry,” he remarked.
“They were all ages: men and women, people from all ethnic backgrounds. It was just a really good celebration of citizenship.”
The honourees got a plaque and a certificate.
