‘.ca’ turning 25

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In 1987, Rick Hansen finished his Man in Motion tour, the loonie entered our piggy banks for the first time, and hockey great Sidney Crosby was born.

That was also the year Canada carved out its own little corner of cyberspace. Monday, May 14th marks the 25th anniversary of the .ca domain extension. It’s the most recognizable symbol of Canadian identity on the net.

Webnames.ca co-founder John Demco managed it for 13 years out of his office at UBC and tells us it snowballed very quickly from there.

“It started off being people doing research and really quickly expanded into all kinds of other uses,” he explains.

He’s a bit surprised to be talking about it so many years later. “I’m not surprised to see the continued interest in networking and electronically-mediated social interaction with people, but I had no idea that this particular part of it would still be so relevant.”

Demco expects the two-millionth .ca registration some time later this year.
