Outpouring of support for police after shootings

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – It has been a deadly 24 hours across the Pacific Northwest. Eight people are dead after shootings in Maple Ridge, Port Moody, and Seattle.

But it’s the RCMP shootout with armed attempted murder suspect Angus Mitchell yesterday that seems to have struck a chord with people across the Lower Mainland, resulting in an outpouring of thanks and support on social media.

“Thoughts are with the @bcRCMP officers involved in the shooting in Maple Ridge. You have a tough job. Thank you for keeping us safe” tweets @PerfectPlaces.

“They make the decisions that some of us would never fathom” says @MediatedReality.

“Thank u 4 putting your lives on the line to help make our communities safe. You are heroes who unfortunately are taken for granted” from @nbrunner54.

There are similar sentiments on the streets of Vancouver.

“That’s their job! I definitely appreciate what they are doing,” says Puspa, who points out police officers choose to risk their lives to keep communities safe.

“People always look at the negative aspects of media coverage,” notes Jason. “Most of them have families and they put their lives out there. I think it is appreciated by most people.”

Angus Mitchell was shot near 132nd Street and died in hospital. He was on the run, wanted for attempted murder in a Burnaby shooting and is believed to have been involved in a double homicide in Burnaby on Sunday.
