Will you choose a toll-free bridge over the new Port Mann?

SURREY (NEWS1130) – BC’s Transportation Minister isn’t worried about drivers diverting to the Pattullo Bridge when tolls kick in on the new Port Mann Bridge.

New Westminster is concerned about its roads promoted as the untolled alternative. But Blair Lekstrom says he has met with council to hear their concerns.

“They have a bit of a concern that there may be a diversion of traffic over to the Pattullo Bridge,” says Lekstrom.

He says that may be a reality at the onset, but adds the intent of the new Port Mann Bridge is to free up your time.

“I think that it probably won’t take more than one trip to be going over that [Pattullo] bridge and get caught up in that congestion and know that you can avoid it by paying the toll, freeing up your time,” believes Lekstrom.

New West is also worried about plans for a larger Pattullo bridge, which could also end up tolled when it opens. That would leave drivers south of the Fraser with just two free crossings.
