SAANICH (NEWS1130) – The Coast Guard has called off the search for a 20-year-old man who went missing after the canoe he and his friend were in capsized late last night near Victoria.

Saanich Police were called after people heard cries for help near Ten Mile Point just before 11:00 p.m.

Troy Haddock, Coast Guard officer, maritime co-ordinator with the Victoria Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, says one man was pulled out after almost an hour in the water.

“It was still believed to be daylight or just twilight hours. They were believed to be paddling across from Cadboro Point to Chatham Islands to go camping,” explains Haddock.

The man was taken to a Victoria hospital suffering from hypothermia. He told police that neither him nor his friend were wearing life jackets at the time the canoe capsized.

An extensive search for the missing man began around 10:45 p.m. yesterday, drawing on resources from the military, coast guard, municipal fire services and the RCMP. It was called off just before noon today.

Saanich RCMP are now treating this as a missing person case.
