Hot weather affecting air quality: expert

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Particulate matter from forest fires in Colorado and beyond – far beyond –  have been causing the haze we’ve been seeing around the Lower Mainland.

“We’re also seeing smoke coming into the lower Fraser Valley and we believe that smoke is coming all the way from Siberia, where there’s some large forest fires and that smoke is being transported across the Pacific Ocean, coming down into the Fraser Valley,” says Ken Reid, air quality planner for Metro Vancouver.

He adds the hot weather also affects air quality.

“The air quality is degrading somewhat,” he explains. “We’re getting a build-up of smog and that’s quite typical of hot, sunny weather.”

Reid says air quality readings are double what they usually are at this time of year although that’s not unusual.
