Canadians prepared to shell out cash for locally-grown food

By

VANCOUVER  (NEWS1130) – How much more are you willing to pay for food grown close to home?

A new survey finds we don’t mind laying out the cash for local groceries.

Chalk it up to the locavore movement; a poll of more than 1,000 people done for BMO found Canadians are willing to pay nearly 20 per cent more for locally grown food.

That’s especially true of regional specialties, such as BC fruit and wine, beef from Alberta, or Atlantic seafood.

Why do we like to eat local? The top reason is supporting Canadian growers, followed by freshness. Protecting the environment and safety are also among the most common reasons.
