Does quality or quantity count in Canada’s medal haul?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – This morning’s bronze medal win by Canada’s women’s soccer team brought Canada to 15 medals. But only one of those medals is gold.

News1130 hit the street, asking fans what matters more: quality or quantity. For the most part, they tell us the more medals, the better.

“It at least shows that they’re successful at a bunch of things versus just one aspect of something. I think as long as you’re doing your best, that’s all you can really do,” suggests one man.

We spoke with Laurie who figures our athletes are doing just fine. “I think they’re doing a wonderful job and I don’t think it really matters. I think they do the best that they can. I don’t think the colour of the medal matters as much as winning a medal.”

Many people suggest more government funding for athletes is needed in order to compete with countries like the US and China. When it comes to hardware, we’ve certainly done better before; in the past three summer games, we’ve walked away with at least three gold medals.

The Canadian Olympic Committee has set a goal of finishing 12th in the medal count.
