Customer road rage nothing new for ferry workers: union

By

NANAIMO (NEWS1130) – It seems road rage is nothing new for folks waiting for a BC ferry.

But the man arrested at Nanaimo’s Departure Bay Ferry Terminal Sunday was not actually dealing with a BC Ferries staffer.

BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union says the man was being dealt with by traffic controllers when he became outraged about a three sailing wait.

But the union’s president Chris Abbott says his members encounter this more than you’d realize.

“On the major terminals I would say that during the summer months an incident of this nature happens at least every weekend,” he says.

He adds that people go off for all kinds of reasons.

“They blame the employees for late sailings or delayed sailings,” he explains. “Or perhaps they misjudged just how bad a line-up was going to be.”
