Top Chef winner closes Vancouver restaurants

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s high rent and other economic factors have forced a well-known restaurateur to shut down his businesses.

Dale MacKay is the owner of Ensemble and eTap just off Robson and was the winner of Top Chef Canada. He opened up to News1130 about his recent loss.

“Vancouver’s a tough market and I chose an area to open up both my restaurants in one of the most expensive areas in Vancouver,” he explains.

Having survived about a year and a half, the Food Network star blames being a little over ambitious where competition is steep.

But it’s not a total failure.

“It’s also a very big learning curve, and I’ve taken a lot from this and I’m walking away as a better chef,” he says.

Now, he’s taking his passion for food back home to Saskatchewan where he’ll be with family and friends.
