Metro Vancouver cracks down on grease

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Metro Vancouver wants restaurants to cut down on the amount of grease that ends up in the sewage system.

A new bylaw will require restaurants to properly maintain grease traps, which prevent the goo from going down the drain.

Metro Vancouver chair Greg Moore says the simple measure should save the district millions of dollars a year.

“When restaurants dump grease into sewer pipes, it slowly builds up over time. They clog the pipes. The pipes could burst, and you don’t want a sewer pipe to break.”

Restaurants not having a grease trap could be fined $2,000.

“Fines will start off small, but could increase quite a bit, depending on how often they break the bylaw or the size of the facility. It’s not about collecting money, it’s really about educating people about putting the grease traps in place,” Moore says.

The new bylaw stipulates how big the grease traps have to be, and how often they have to be pumped out.
