HOV lane warning for revamped Highway 1

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – We’ve been hearing from many people recently getting tickets and RCMP Traffic Services is helping to clear up confusion among drivers about HOV lane restrictions on the revamped Highway 1 and the new HOV-only exit ramps.

Corporal Robert McDonald says drivers have gotten used to HOV lane restrictions from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. as construction continues west of the Port Mann Bridge.

But he warns people driving on the Port Mann and east, it’s two or more people in the car 24 hours a day. “We’ve had a few people saying, ‘it’s a weekend, I’m allowed to use it.’ Or they’re thinking that because they’ve seen it westbound, west of the Port Mann that it’s in effect for the entire thing. But it’s clearly marked,” he explains.

Tickets are also being handed out at the new HOV-only 202nd Street and 156 Street exits, and more restricted off-ramps will be opening this year in Coquitlam (truck-only ramps in the Cape Horn Interchange), Burnaby (bus-only ramps at Government Street), and Vancouver (Grandview Highway interchange).

If you are the only one in the car and busted driving in the HOV lane it’s a $109 fine.
