Clarifying the flu boundaries across Metro Vancouver

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While the recent flu outbreak has been declared a hazard by the Fraser Health Authority that is not the case for Vancouver Coastal Health.

Anna Marie D’Angelo with the authority says the increased numbers are just not here yet.

“We certainly ask people not to let their guard go down.  People need to remember the flu shot.  Your immunity is not going to be built up for a couple of weeks.  Medical health officers have said that we could get another spike of flu cases in February.”

She adds they’ve never had to issue an alert like the one within the Fraser Health Authority.

“It would be up to the medical health officers to decide, but again in the Vancouver Coastal Health we’ve had a couple mild years of flu, and this year we are back to out regular sort-of numbers; maybe on the high side.”

Within the authority it is now mandatory to wear masks if you haven’t been vaccinated when visiting long-term care homes.

Earlier this week, News1130 told you about two elementary school classrooms in Surrey that saw an absentee rate of 50 per cent because of flu.  That is not the case for schools within Vancouver Coastal boundaries.

We have been told there are no significant flu-related absences reported at any Richmond, Vancouver or Coquitlam schools at this time.
