Cyclists don’t think bike tax could work locally

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Local cyclists don’t think a bike tax being considered in Washington State would work here.

The idea was to charge a $25 fee on all new bikes sold in Washington State.

Erin O’Melinn with Vancouver cycling coalition HUB says cyclists already pay more than their fair share for infrastructure.

“It’s a myth that cyclists don’t pay for any parts of the road. In fact, for local roads, we’re actually paying the majority of it just like everyone else is through property taxes and other general taxes.”

She adds that since bicycles are so much lighter and therefore easier on roads, the only way a bike tax would work is if they greatly increased taxes for cars and trucks as well.
