Ryan Kesler out with broken foot

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –   Ryan Kesler’s return to the lineup was a short one.  The Canucks forward showed up to the rink today with an aircast on his right foot, and the team has now confirmed that a CT scan this morning has revealed a fracture to Kesler’s right foot.

“I assume Kesler will be out for a little while,” said Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault,  who said the nature of the injury may keep Kesler out of the lineup up to four-to-six weeks.  Vigneault also said that two earlier x-rays were negative.

Kesler had 19:07 of ice time in last night’s 4-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes and the injury is believed to have been suffered after blocking a shot in a recent game.  Kesler had played just seven games this season after returning from off-season shoulder and wrist surgeries.  The Canucks are expected to recall Andrew Ebbett from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.  The team did put forward Aaron Volpatti on waivers earlier today.

With Kesler out and the team needing practice players, Manny Malhotra helped out by taking a forward spot in drills today.  After practice, Malhotra spoke for the first time since the team shut his season down over concerns about his recurring eye problems.  Malhotra did say that he felt Canucks general manager Gillis had his best interest in mind, and he does not question his sincerity regarding the decision.  Malhotra thinks he can still play in the NHL.

The Canucks are back to action Saturday when the Stanley Cup champion LA Kings visit Rogers Arena.
