New library proposed for Gabriola Mansion

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s one of the last three remaining mansions in the West End on what’s often regarded as one of the most beautiful properties in the city.

But there’s concern for the Gabriola because it’s been sitting empty for years, last used as a Romano’s Bar and Grill.

Janet Leduc with Heritage Vancouver says the 113-year-old mansion on Davie and Nicola was built for B.T. Rogers, founder of Rogers Sugar.gabriola

“It was described as probably the most lavish private home ever constructed in British Columbia. The stonework comes from Gabriola Island and the stained glass was designed by James Blomfield. It’s pretty special and important as far as we’re concerned,” Leduc explains.

She says it’s an A-listed heritage building, and Heritage Vancouver is encouraging city hall to enter into a dialogue with owner Keg Restaurants to determine its plans for the mansion and once again bring the space to life.

Leduc says the Gabriola received heritage designation in a deal that included subdividing the property and a density bonus on the adjacent site.

She believes because of the city’s substantial investment in the property there’s an opportunity to provide a place for you to enjoy.

Leduc says if it’s not reopened as a restaurant, it would be a great location for a new public library for the West End.

“The West End Community Centre needs more space and so does Joe Fortes Library. One of the ideas that people have been putting forth for the new West End Plan is a library and restaurant combined. It’s an absolutely perfect spot for that,” she says.
