Christy Clark’s ballot may not count

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Liberal Leader Christy Clark took advantage of advanced voting yesterday, but she’s caused quite a bit of confusion because she wrote down two names on the ballot.
Clark cast her ballot in Burnaby yesterday.
“The district electoral officers will look at each ballot and determine if the intent of the voter is clear; that’s what they will use as their guideline and it will be determined at that time,” says Don Main with Elections BC.
She does not live in the riding she is running in. At first, Clark wrote down her own name, but realizing the mistake, she took it back and wrote down the name of the Vancouver-Fairview Liberal candidate, Margaret MacDiarmid.
The problem is it doesn’t look like she crossed out her name.
“At the end of the day, the intent of the voter must be clear on the ballot,” says Main. If the intent is not clear, the vote could be thrown out.
The BC Liberals say her intention was clear and think the vote will count.
People who cast ballots at advance polls are typically handed blank ballots, meaning they have to write down the name of the appropriate candidate.
General Election Day is less than a week away: May 14th.
