Body recovered in Fraser River near Massey Tunnel

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Mounties in Richmond are looking into how a body ended up in the Fraser River.
RCMP Inspector Davis Wendell says it was found by a fishing boat late this afternoon near the Massey Tunnel.
“At 5:30 pm Richmond RCMP received a report alleging that there were human remains floating in the Fraser River near the Deas Island Tunnel. The Canadian Coast Guard was engaged and deployed a vessel to that area and did recover the human remains in question. They were transported to the Sea Island Coast Guard base where they were turned over to the Richmond RCMP.”

He can’t say if the body recovered is linked to the body caught in a Chilliwack fisherman’s net on Saturday or the one that was swept away in Gold Creek on Friday.
“The investigation is very early in its infancy right now. Those investigative leads will certainly be followed up. I’m really not in a position to comment specifically on those situations.”

He says the coroner has been called in. He adds the incident is being treated like a criminal investigation until the body is identified and family are notified. Police aren’t releasing any details on a description of the body.
