March Against Monsanto draws hundreds

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hundreds of people took over the streets of downtown Vancouver protesting for better food labeling when it comes to genetically modified organisms (GMO) foods.

Christen Traversy with March Against Monsanto says a lot of people don’t really do enough research to find out what they’re eating and that’s a problem. “We’re demanding mandatory GMO labeling on all GMO products so that the consumer is aware of what he or she is buying…right now, unless you’re a very avid researcher, you’re probably eating GMO, it’s really hard to get away from it.”

Demonstrators were hoping to send a message to American agricultural production giant Monsanto.
Traversy says Monsanto is not only the largest supplier of GMOs but is known for neglecting the environment and human rights.

She says GMO in food is bad for your health and the environment.
“There’s been lots of studies that have been done that show that GMOs cause a host of illnesses including various types of cancers, obesity…diseases such as Parkinson’s and Autism and leaky gut syndrome.”

This was one of many rallies taking place around the world.
