Brazen theft off Surrey dealership lot ends in arrest

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Mounties are telling us about a bizarre theft just after 6 o’clock Saturday evening.

A couple brought in a GMC Jimmy to trade it for a new car at the Applewood Kia dealership in Surrey.

“I imagine when he went off the four or four and a half foot drop it would have looked like one of the ‘Dukes of Hazard’ leaps,” says RCMP Staff Sergeant Murray Hedderson.

When the man and woman left the lot to sign paperwork, someone took off with their their old SUV.  But the suspect returned to the lot 15 minutes later.

When lot employees approached the car, “the driver then revved the engine, then drove off across the lot, over a 1.3 metre drop, landing on the parking lot of a restaurant adjacent to the dealership.  He struck a parked vehicle and came to a stop against the restaurant,” says Hedderson.

A 51-year-old man was arrested.

Police aren’t sure why he returned to the lot, but they’re not ruling out drugs and alcohol.
