One in hospital after van explosion in Port Moody

PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) – One person is in hospital after a loud explosion outside a Port Moody fast food outlet.

It happened around 1:45 p.m. in a van in the parking lot of the McDonalds restaurant next to the police department.

Ellecia Hobbis at the Cap’s Westwood Cycle across the street ran outside to see what had happened. She says the roof of the van blew off.

“It was hard because the roof had curled over, obstructing our view from what was going on inside, but there was flames coming from inside the vehicle,” she describes.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the driver had already gotten out. She has been taken to hospital with what the fire chief describes as “superficial burns.”

Police say it looks like an industrial accident involving unsafe storage of fuel, though they’re still investigating the cause.
