Kelowna has highest crime rate in Canada: statistics

By

KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – It’s a popular getaway for Metro Vancouver, but it’s now earned a dubious distinction; Kelowna has the highest crime rate in the country.

The Okanagan city’s rate went up six per cent last year, which was enough to shoot past Regina for the top spot, according to Statistics Canada.

Here in Metro Vancouver, the crime rate is down two per cent, but still higher than the national average. Abbotsford/Mission is also higher than Canada’s average, despite a seven per cent drop last year.

Our province as a whole is down two per cent. Provincial drunk driving rates have dropped 24 per cent.

But BC has the highest rates in the country for drug offences involving marijuana, heroin, and ecstacy. We have the second-highest rate for offences involving meth.
