VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Don’t go digging those red mittens out of your closet just yet.
A petition calling for the Olympics to move from Sochi to Vancouver because of Russia’s anti-gay policies is gaining steam, but Vancouver city councillor says the idea wouldn’t work.
“I can understand the intention, but practically I don’t understand how it can happen,” says Geoff Meggs. “It’s not like putting fresh sheets on a guest bed.”
The petition picked up some momentum this week when actor and activist George Takei threw his support behind it. But Meggs says the logistical challenges would likely be too complicated to work around.
For example, athletes wouldn’t be able to stay at the Olympic Village because the units have been converted to condos and thousands of people now live there.
