VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a big day for the little otter found shot in the head in the waters of Tofino. He will now undergo a number of tests as his condition begins to improve.
The otter, who has been named Walter, was in critical condition last week. But Dr. Martin Haulena with the Vancouver Aquarium says he has started to stabilize.
“I am a lot happier with his energy levels,” says Haulena. “I am a lot happier with his grooming, he is able to maintain temperature a bit better, which is a good sign, and a lot of his gastrointestinal issues are improving.”
And he is also eating better. But unfortunately, dozens of pellets remain in the animal’s face, because it would be too painful to remove them now.
As for his survival…
“I’ve had too many animals start to improve and then take a sudden turnaround. I’m very cautious with these guys,” explains Haulena.
It’s still not known who shot the otter.
