Can Canada keep title as a lead ocean sciences researcher?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada needs to make some changes soon, if it wants to hold down the top spot in ocean science research.

That’s according to a new report from Council of Canadian Academies.

UBC Ocean Sciences Professor Curtis Suttle says the biggest issue is resource availability. “Things like ships are incredibly expensive, both in terms of what it costs to have a ship, but also what it costs to operate. So, the coordination of those kinds of things, I think, is much more of a critical issue.”

The report suggests upgrading the research fleet. It also suggests coordinating activities and pooling resources to better study the ocean.

Suttle also thinks ocean research needs to be better focused. “One thing Canada hasn’t really got grips into is a vision, I think. A vision in terms of exactly what we want to do with ocean research in Canada and how we’re going to muster the resources to do that.”
