GMO food lecturers warn of dangers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Genetically modified foods are a contentious topic, now an international lecturer says the gene modification is only part of the problem.

“The genetic engineering technology itself is not safe,” says Dr. Thierry Vrain, who is currently promoting his new book on the subject.

But while GMO foods are often in the news, Vrain says there is an equal concern that is far less public.

“All the genetically engineered crops are sprayed with a very toxic herbicide which has been believed to be completely non-toxic but that’s not real.”

Vrain says most people don’t know the herbicide is so commonly used.

He says it’s cheap, easily available and very effective which is why it’s used so much.

Vrain isn’t alone in sounding the warning over GMO foods.

Joining him on the lecture circuit is Dr. Shiv Chopra, a former Health Canada scientist.

Chopra says Canada and the United States are in a bubble compared to the rest of the world when it comes to GMO foods.

“Russia doesn’t want to, China doesn’t want to, India doesn’t want to, whole of Europe doesn’t want to, why is it that Canada wants to?”

He says our food supply as a whole has several problems.

“Apart from GMOs our food has become the most toxic on earth. We have hormones, we have antibiotics, we have been feeding animals to animals, we have GMOs, and we have pesticides.”

He says independent studies from Europe, where GMO foods are banned, support claims the products are dangerous.
