City crews ready with salt trucks

By

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – So far it’s just a few flurries, but with a few centimetres of snow expected through today and this evening, municipal crews have been busy brining, salting and sanding roads across the region.

At the National Works Yard in Vancouver, trucks started streaming in and out last night.

“We were out all night with trucks on all the major roads and bus routes doing a pre-salting. Flurries were supposed to come earlier in the morning but that’s okay; we’ve been out all night and we have all the roads treated,” says Murray Wightman, City Manager of Street Operations.

“Crews will probably be out all day long and into the night.”

There are no appreciable accumulations expected on the roads before the snow is forecast to turn to rain by Wednesday, but Wightman says they are ready to ramp up their response if needed.

“As far as ploughs, if we are anywhere around five centimetres or more — sometimes a bit less than that — once we get enough to push the snow with then we’ll start dropping the ploughs and moving everything to the curb lanes,” he tells News1130.
