Doors open at new Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Canada has its first Hard Rock Casino and it’s in Coquitlam.

Friday night marks the opening of the rebranded Boulevard Casino.

The number of slots and tables remains the same, but as with Hard Rock-type establishments elsewhere in the world, it will feature music memorabilia.

Executive Director Raj Mutti admits they didn’t predict the amount of controversy that was generated as the casino also rebranded what’s been known as the Red Robinson Theatre.

But he says the legendary DJ will have a special place at the casino.

“We’re actually going to be honouring Red with a memorabilia display, showcasing Red and all of his talents over the years. That’s something we’ve been working very closely with him on,” Mutti explains.

He says they made a point of gathering items from all sorts of artists and all sorts of music genres.

“We have a Jimi Hendrix gallery, a Bruce Springsteen gallery, Shania Twain, Maria Carey, Taylor Swift, Madonna, just to name a few. There are 144 memorabilia cases throughout our facility.”

The $15-million dollar renovations also included new carpets, new paint, seven new eateries, and the addition of almost-nightly entertainment.

The old Boulevard Casino had suffered from sagging visitor numbers due to the economic meltdown three years ago, which coincided with Highway One construction.  Mutti says the rebranding is meant to be a shot in the arm for the casino.
