Surrey task force making progress on cutting crime

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A task force to help cut crime in Surrey is already getting results.

Mayor Dianne Watts says the level of sucess is in large part due to drug house raids, dozens of arrests and more police on the ground.

Watts says 49 more officers have been deployed to Newton and Whalley. She says 56 arrests have been made and eight search warrants have been executed on drug houses.

“We’ll continue to look at the other pieces of the work that were doing and undergoing on the task force. As well, some of the prevention, education and the ongoing initiatives. With a third of our population under the age of 19, the prevention and education piece is really crucial,” she explains.

Watts adds Newton’s heritage evergreen trees may have to come down. “They are beautiful, there’s no doubt about it, but it’s allowed people that want to conduct illegal activity a place to hide.”

Watts understands the community has said before it does not want those trees to be cut down.
