Canadians earn Academy Award nominations in music, editing, sound categories

TORONTO – Several Canadians have scored Academy Award nominations in a variety of categories. A look at the Canuck contenders:
Film editing: Montreal’s Martin Pensa shares a nomination with John Mac McMurphy for their work on the HIV drama “Dallas Buyers Club.”
Foreign-language film: Toronto-born, Berlin-based producer David Gerson is part of the team behind the Palestinian film “Omar.” If it wins, the trophy would go to director Hany Abu-Assad.
Original Score: Toronto’s Owen Pallett and Will Butler of the Montreal-based band Arcade Fire snagged attention for their work on the music of the futuristic romance “Her.”
Sound Mixing: Toronto-born Andy Koyama shares a nomination with Beau Borders and David Brownlow for their work on the Navy SEALs tale “Lone Survivor.”
Visual Effects: Montreal-based computer graphics supervisor Chris Lawrence is up for his work on the space thriller “Gravity.” The London-bred Lawrence shares the nod with Tim Webber, Dave Shirk and Neil Corbould.
