First charges in Senate scandal won’t be the last: RCMP

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The Mounties suggest the first charges in the Senate expense scandal likely won’t be the last.

One count each of fraud and breach of trust were laid yesterday against retired senator Mac Harb and suspended Senator Patrick Brazeau.

The two are alleged to have claimed living and travel expenses to which they were not entitled.

Although Brazeau had no immediate comment, Harb’s lawyer vows a vigorous defence.

Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin, two other suspended senators, continue to be investigated by the RCMP for claiming allegedly fraudulent expenses.

RCMP assistant commissioner Gilles Michaud says several leads continue to be explored in what he calls an “exhaustive and unbiased” manner.

Prime Minister Harper is complimenting the Mounties for yesterday’s charges, saying all parliamentarians must respect the rules and the law.
