Strong polling numbers for Vancouver and Surrey mayors

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Don’t expect a change in City Hall anytime soon for the Lower Mainland’s two biggest municipalities.

A poll from Insights West shows both Surrey’s mayor and Vancouver’s mayor remain popular, although not at the same level.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts has a sky-high approval rating of 73 per cent despite being at the job for 9 years. Pollster Mario Canseco calls the numbers very rare. “What was interesting to me, even though there’s a lot of concern about crime, it’s not something that is affecting her numbers directly. I think people are looking at the situation as something that can be solved with the intervention of the federal government or Victoria.”

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has the approval of just over half of the voters polled, but Canseco says those numbers climb to 60 per cent for people between 18 to 34. “That is his base, those are the people who need to be excited about voting for him again on November 15th.”
