Whitecaps suffer first loss of the season

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) -The Vancouver Whitecaps let one get away Saturday afternoon at BC Place. Colorado’s Jose Mari scored twice in a span of 3 minutes to secure a 2-1 win for the visiting Rapids. The loss is Vancouver’s first of the season overall, and it’s first at BC Place.

Colorado improves to 2-1-1, while the Whitecaps record falls to 2-1-2.

Vancouver led 1-nil through 78 minutes. Darren Mattocks displayed great finish for his first of the season, putting one home from just outside the box. Mattocks also had a goal taken off the board in the first half due to an offsides call.

The game turned when Vancouver was forced to play with ten men. Matias Laba’s handball was enough for his second yellow card, and an ejection from the game. Colorado started to generate momentum and it was Jose Mari who cashed in.

He ripped a great shot past David Ousted from 20 yards out to the left of the box in the 79th minute, and followed it up with his second of the match from point blank range just three minutes later. Vancouver was left in a state of shock after that, and never threatened offensively again.

Neither club was able to generate much offensively in the first half, and it looked as though Mattocks’ marker would stand up for the club’s third victory. The Whitecaps moved everyone upfield for the final moments of injury time, and couldn’t find the equalizer.

Now Vancouver must regroup, and look to bounce back next Saturday night in Los Angeles against the Galaxy.
