Kitimat votes no on Northern Gateway

KITIMAT (NEWS1130) – The people of Kitimat have voted 58 per cent “no” in a non-binding plebiscite over the Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

The vote was essentially symbolic, reflecting the general sentiment of the town where the proposed pipeline would wind up.

Kitimat’s council has maintained its neutrality on the issue, up until now. But that could change after the next council meeting.

“The results go to council on Monday night, then councillors will decide what to do,” says Mayor Joanne Monaghan.

She concedes people have concerns about many of the proposed projects for that area.

“There is a lot of apprehension about a lot of things, even Alcan Rio Tinto, so there is a lot of apprehension.”

The federal government has the ultimate say on the project, and will be delivering a decision before the end of June.
